Today a hero returns home.
That can sometimes seem a trite statement, perhaps simplistic, but it is true. The body of 1st Lt. Leevi Barnard, an Ararat, Va., man who was killed May 21 in Iraq, will come home to Mount Airy.
A procession caring the coffin containing his body will be coming into Mount Airy today, beginning in Winston-Salem around 10:30 a.m.
It’s a work day. It may be raining. It’s short notice. There are a dozen other reasons one could give for not lining this route to show respect for a fallen soldier.
The truth is, though, this young man gave his life in service to America. In service to our community. We hope businesses and individuals will pause from their daily activities today, line the streets and show 1st Lt. Barnard, his friends and his family, due respect for his sacrifice.
