WESTFIELD — The Rock House Ruritan Club will host its second annual Veterans and Community Appreciation Day Saturday beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Rock House Ruritan Community Center, on N.C. 268, five miles east of Pilot Mountain.

“For us,” explained club member Mary Romine, “this is an opportunity to give back. It’s a chance for us to honor all veterans for what they’ve given and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country. We can never honor them too much.

“It’s also a chance for us to show our appreciation to our community,” she continued, “for all they’ve done to support us. We want to do this as a way of bringing our community together and thanking them for helping us to help others.”

The early evening event will feature free hot dogs, baked beans, desserts and drinks for all in attendance, while supplies last.

Special guests will be Commander Don Isaacs and Quartermaster Jim Nichols of Pilot Mountain VFW Post 9436. A demonstration and explanation of the proper techniques for folding a flag will be provided along with a history and explanation of the VFW “Buddy Poppies” program.

“This should be a nice patriotic evening and a good chance for our community to come together and socialize,” Romine said. “We hope a good number will come out and help us honor our veterans.”
