Va. man faces sex charges with juvenile

HILLSVILLE, Va. — The Hillsville Police Department has arrested a local man after an investigation revealed that he had traveled to Kansas and brought a 15 year old juvenile he met over the internet to Hillsville.

Dewey Edward Nelson, 38, of Hillsville was arrested without incident and the juvenile taken into custody on May 20. After further investigation, the FBI was contacted by the Hillsville Police Department and has been working with HPD on this case. Nelson was taken into federal custody on May 21 and transported to Roanoke for his initial appearance in federal court.

State charges against Nelson include: obstruction of justice, using an electronic device to solicit a child, two counts of having intercourse with a child under the age of 18, two counts of sodomy, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A search warrant has been served at Nelson’s residence and additional charges may follow.

The FBI and the United States Attorney in Roanoke and handling all federal charges. Master Police Officer Dennis Boyer, Officer Robbie Martin and Capt. Jason Hawks are conducting the local investigation.

Hillsville Police Chief Steve Williams hopes that this case will serve as a reminder to all parents with children who have access to a computer that they must be very diligent in monitoring all internet activity.
