David Hayes, career development coordinator at North Surry High School, said one of the ways the freshmen got to expand their horizons was through the three corporate sponsors at the academy this year. He said Wal-Mart, Lowe’s hardware and CK Technologies all partnered with the school and not only gave monetary donations, but gave of time gift of time as well.
“They have been good sponsors. They have not only given money to the school, but they have provided cookouts, T-shirts and field trips. They have also given of their time,” Hayes said Thursday morning.
He said students got to visit the companies and find out first-hand w3hat is needed in the workplace.
Students presented each company with a plaque of recognition. Chase Gough presented to James Bell, senior materials specialist, and Carol Colna, human resources manager with CK Technologies. Taylor Newton gave Bryan Turney, Lowe’s hardware commercial sales specialist, a special recognition. Marc McKeithan awarded Karrah Dunn, co-manager at Wal-Mart, a special recognition for her company’s efforts.
“This has been such a successful program for students. They have enjoyed having visitors from each of the sponsors,” Hayes said.
During the awards presentation to the sponsors, representatives with CK Technologies presented awards of their own to the winner and runner-up of an art contest. Participating students submitted a health-care logo. The winning logo, by Jenna Upchurch, will be featured on company wellness information. In addition to receiving a framed certificate for winning the contest, Upchurch won $100.
The runner-up, Diego Martinez, also received a certificate and a custom-made CK Technologies company truck.
Neil Atkins, associate principal, thanked each company representative for their efforts.
“Thank you from North Surry High School for a very successful year,” Atkins said.
