The family of an 18-year-old Mount Airy woman will be saying their final good-byes today following a Sunday morning wreck that took her life.

Kayla Norman of 154 Summer’s End Trail was on her way to church when her car went off of Pipers Gap Road and hit two trees. Norman was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where died Sunday afternoon.

Norman’s aunt, Brigget Burch, said she wanted everyone to know that Kayla was a good Christian girl who loved the Lord so much that her final act was driving to church on that fateful morning.

“Church was her whole life. She was so loved. She touched so many lives,” Burch said.

Norman was on her way to services at the Firehouse Ministries, Burch said.

Burch said she believes that Norman hydroplaned because of wet roads that morning.

“I know they said she was alone in the car that morning, but she really wasn’t alone. The Lord was with her,” Burch said.

Burch reported that Norman had been diagnosed with Lupus, but had decided to quit taking all of her medication and “Give it to God.”

The Rev. Lonnie Gunter said he has known Norman for a couple of years. He said up until two months ago Norman was a part of the praise team at Genesis Full Gospel Church where her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m.

“She was a fine young lady. I’ve never heard a bad word about her. She was always kind and polite. She was a very gentle-spirited person. It’s a very sad thing,” Gunter said.

Norman was a student at Surry Community College and was employed at Burger King.

The family will receive friends tonight at Moody Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m.
