STUART, Va. — More suspects have been named as a result of indictments recently issued in a massive undercover drug probe in Patrick County, including two people from Mount Airy.

A list of 10 additional persons indicted, released Tuesday by the Patrick Sheriff’s Office, also includes several residents from the Ararat and Claudville areas.

Altogether, 45 defendants were named in 161 indictments issued last week by a county grand jury. Patrick Sheriff Dan Smith said the indictments resulted from a 14-month investigation conducted with the cooperation of authorities in Surry County.

An initial list of persons implicated which was released last week included those who had been taken into custody, with officials explaining that the remainder would be identified when they were arrested, and if not, on Monday of this week.

Smith said Tuesday that all but 10 of the suspects had been apprehended, including 35 adults on various charges mainly related to distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana. Three juveniles who allegedly distributed drugs also were indicted.

Based on the remaining unserved indictments that were made public by the Patrick County court clerk’s office this week, the additional persons named in the probe from this immediate area and their alleged offenses include:

n Jeremy Maxton Cooke of Mount Airy, who was indicted on one count of distribution of methamphetamine, two counts of distribution of methamphetamine (second offense), one count of distribution of marijuana, one count of distribution of an imitation Schedule I or II drug and one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

n James Harding Parker of Mount Airy, four counts of distribution of methamphetamine (second offense).

n Merlin Underwood Smith of Claudville, one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one count of distribution of a Schedule I or II narcotic, one count of conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I or II narcotic, one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, one count of conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I or II narcotic (second offense) and one count of distribution of methamphetamine (second offense).

n James Brandon Bennett of Ararat, one count of possession of methamphetamine.

n Sherry Lynn Manning of Ararat, one count of distribution of methamphetamine and two counts of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

n Jeremiah Zeus Morris of Claudville, distribution of a Schedule III narcotic and one count of unlawfully procuring prescription drugs.

Other suspects were named this week from additional sections of Patrick County and Henry County. Complete addresses and ages for those indicted were unavailable.

The Patrick sheriff has indicated that the probe is part of a continuing effort to eradicate drugs from the county.

In addition to local officers in Virginia and North Carolina, the investigation involved the Virginia State Police along with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
