Spring is here and with it the inevitable influx of tourists taking advantage of the nice weather to explore all that Surry County has to offer.

With this in mind and the knowledge that tourism is in fact a huge industry for this county, one would think that it would be prudent for the citizens here would be a bit more conscientious of where they throw their trash.

Someone pointed out to me not too long ago that our highways are in fact littered with garbage. From drink bottles and cigarette butts to actual bags of garbage, it is nearly impossible to drive in this county without seeing these items scouring the otherwise beautiful landscape.

What must this sight say to those visiting from elsewhere? I would think it says that we do not care about our county. It says that we are not concerned with taking the time to remove a bottle from the car and put it in the trash can, instead just tossing it out the window while traveling 60 miles per hour.

I know that it is easy to toss a can in the bed of the pick-up truck thinking you will throw it away when you get home. However, that can often blows out of the bed of the truck and onto the road without the driver ever realizing it is gone.

It is the actual trash bags that confuse me. How do they end up on the side of the road? It can only be because the owner of said trash simply did not care enough to take it to the nearest garbage can. Some people have said that the trash bags flew out as they were driving. If that is the case, they should take the time to tie the bag down in the back of the truck or weigh it down with something so that that does not happen.

Even if you do not care about the environment, you should care about the fate of the county and helping it to survive economically. There are people here to care enough to go pick up your trash on the side of the road, would it not be nice if those people no longer had to do that? I am sure that they would appreciate it.
