The Surry Central girls had the highest overall team performance put in by both schools with a fourth-place finish, but the rest of the day’s performers raised eyebrows in individual events.
The Greyhounds’ Kristian Kipp defeated Surry Central’s Patty Murphy in the shot put, by just five inches with a throw of 33 feet 2 inches.
But it was Murphy who came out on top in the women’s discus throw, defeating Kipp with a throw of 114 feet 8 inches, 12 feet farther than all other competitors.
The Golden Eagle’s John Newton flew above the competition in the men’s pole vault, tying a Surry Central school record and blowing away the competition with a vault of 12-6.
North Surry’s Meredith Shinault picked up second place to Starmount’s India Martin in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.01 and also took second to Starmount’s Cara Church in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.79 while the Greyhounds’ Samantha Simpson finished second in the women’s high jump.
Surry Central also had a strong day in the team relays, winning both the men’s 4x800 meter relay and the women’s 4x400 meter relay, while finishing third in the women’s 4x100 meter relay.
Surry Central’s Marvin Spicer finished second in the men’s shot put, Jacob Fulk finished second in the men’s 1600 meters, Tanner Martin finished third in the men’s 800 meters and Raul Lachino finished third in the men’s 3200 meters.
On the female side for Surry Central, Rosa Reyes took home two wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, while Lacy Schmidt finished first in the 800 meters.
Samantha Mosley won both the triple and high jump while Raven Stanley came in second in the women’s pole vault.
Ashe County ran away with the women’s overall team scoring, finishing with 178.5 points. The Huskies were followed by Starmount (109.5), Wilkes Central (109), Surry Central (87), North Surry (68), Forbush (65) and North Wilkes (59).
In men’s team scoring, Starmount took home the win with 195 points ahead of Wilkes Central with 138. Forbush (110.5) finished third, followed by Ashe County (85), North Wilkes (80.5), Surry Central (67) and North Surry.
