East Surry senior pitcher Anna Mitchell made quick work of the Vikes, giving up just five hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking one.
Cardinal’s coach Derrick Hill said he was happy to see Mitchell and the rest of the team handle the emotions which senior night brings.
“Senior night is emotional,” he said. “We honor them before the game and typically in years past the emotion has kind of taken precedent to the ball game, but I thought we did a good job tonight of not falling into that trap.”
In addition to taking care of business with the trappings of senior night, Hill said he thought his team did a good job of being aggressive on the bases. The Cardinals picked up five stolen bases Thursday.
“That’s been a point of emphasis,” Hill said. “If they will learn to read the catcher and the pitcher mwe are just gong to make ourselves better. Some people may think we are gambling and maybe we are, but if we get ahead the more pressure you put on the defense the more possible mistakes there are to be made.”
Senior Courtney Simmons led the Cardinals offensively Thursday, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs, one RBI and two stolen bases.
