Gray Stone took just 17 games from the Granite Bears in singles play, with seven of those games coming from just one match in second seed Brooks Mayberry’s 7-6, 7-1 win over Josh Casper.
Mayberry’s first game proved to be the closest game the Bears would have all day, with no other Bears player giving up more than two games in any given match.
Top seed Nick John easily handled Gray Stone’s Harrison Latimer 6-0, 6-1, while third seed Chance Hall defeated Gray Stone’s Micheal Pierce 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles were no different for Mount Airy, with the top team of John and Mayberry rolling by Gray Stone’s Casper and Pierce, 8-1.
Bears coach Frank Mayberry said it was good to take the court after such a long lag between matches and added that while his team had little trouble with its opponent Thursday, the Bears must keep on guard.
“With all the delays due to weather, it was nice to get back out on the court,” Mayberry said. “The guys played well in the first round, and we need to stay focused because the competition will only get tougher in each round.”
