One of two men being sought for shooting at tractor-trailers on Interstate 77 near Surry County has been apprehended, authorities say.
Emilio Rubio-Gonzalez, 24, of Kernersville, whose older brother also is accused of the shootings, was arrested Tuesday in Alabama, according to officials at the Wytheville office of the Virginia State Police.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident after a traffic stop on Interstate 64 initiated by members of the Calera, Ala., Police Department and Shelby County, Ala., Sheriff’s Office. He was being held Tuesday night in the Shelby County Correctional Facility.
Authorities are continuing to search for the man’s brother, Leon Rubio-Gonzalez, 26, of Boone.
Warrants have been issued against both charging each with two counts of attempted murder, three counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The charges stem from an incident about 2 a.m. on April 16 on I-77 near the North Carolina line in which random shots were fired at three-tractor trailers from a speeding car with its headlights off, investigators have said.
Virginia authorities are being assisted by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office; Kernersville Police Department; and the U.S. Marshals Service in addition to Alabama officers.
Leon Rubio-Gonzalez could still be in this area, and anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the Virginia State Police at (276) 228-3131 or, if in Virginia, toll-free at 1-800-542-8716. Tips also can be sent via email to bci-wytheville@vsp.virginia.gov.
