HAYS — North Surry held off a seventh-inning rally by North Wilkes Thursday to take out the Vikings, 5-4.

The Greyhounds managed 14 total hits (12 singles) but had a hard time finding the holes to bring home runners.

North Surry first baseman Josh Holderfield had a strong night at the plate, where he finished 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs.

With the Greyhounds’ number-two pitcher Michael Bronson out for the rest of the season with tendonitis, reliever Jameson Ross got the starting nod for coach Tim Collins.

Ross responded, going the distance, throwing only 14 pitches for balls all night to take home the win.

After the Greyhounds left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, North Wilkes started off its last at bat with a homerun. Then with runners on first and third, North Surry managed two outs in the middle of the Vikings order to take home the win.

The Greyhounds’ Wes Hunter finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, followed by Ryan Stone who finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
