DOBSON — A Pilot Mountain man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to rob one store, then supposedly robbed a convenience store in the Level Cross community. The suspect was caught on his way back to his home in Pilot Mountain.

Lacy Daniels, 49, of South Key Street Apartments, was charged with one count of robbery with dangerous weapon, one count of felony speeding to elude arrest, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of assault by pointing a gun and one count of carrying a concealed weapon, according to Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

The first call came in at 12:52 p.m., from the Neighbors store on U.S. 601 in the Fairview community of Dobson. The suspect allegedly pointed a blue steel revolver at the store clerk, and demanded money. The clerk refused to cooperate and the suspect walked out the door, returning to his white two-door Buick Regal. The clerk attempted to remove the license plate and bent the edges back and was struck by the suspect. The clerk was not injured. The driver left the parking lot and proceeded eastbound on N.C. 268 toward Pilot Mountain.

Then at 1:01 p.m., the Level Cross Country Store was robbed at gunpoint by a white male suspect. The man allegedly displayed a handgun and demanded the money in the cash register. This time the clerk cooperated and the suspect left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect left the parking lot in a white car matching the description from the first attempted robbery heading toward Pilot Mountain.

Detectives and deputies with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and officers with the Pilot Mountain Police Department were advised of the direction of travel of the suspect.

Deputy Josh Wiles of the Surry County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle as it headed toward Pilot Mountain and notified surrounding officers, Atkinson said. Wiles initiated a felony vehicle stop with the assistance of the highway patrol at the intersection of N.C. 268 and Pineridge Trail.

Daniels offered no resistance and complied with the officers, according to Atkinson. The blue steel handgun, extra ammunition and an undisclosed amount of currency were found in Daniel’s possession at the time of arrest, Atkinson said.

Daniels is currently being held at the Surry County Detention Center under a $220,000 secured bond. Daniels will have a first appearance in court on today.
