More than 2,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders will descend on Surry County for four days of riding, games and family fun in August.
Mount Airy was selected to host the 2009 North Carolina Harley Owners Group Rally (H.O.G.), and Goobers restaurant is hosting a preregistration party for people to register for the event and obtain membership into the organization.
The event is Saturday, with preregistration starting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a free concert featuring blues musician Scott Holt from 8 to 10:30 p.m. behind Goobers on U.S. 52 North at its backyard pavilion. There will be beverage sales, and patrons are allowed to bring chairs, but no coolers are allowed.
“It is our way to get everything straight for the rally,” said Jean Collins, who is a Harley rider and the local coordinator for the event.
H.O.G. is a motorcycle group which was formed 25 years ago as a way for the Harley-Davidson Company to keep in touch with its customers. Each year, there are statewide rallies held typically from Thursday to Saturday.
Mount Airy and Surry County’s other municipalities, Pilot Mountain, Elkin and Dobson, will be hosting additional events and festivities through the four-day stay Aug. 19-22. A list of events is available at www.ncstatehogrally.com.
The preregistration deadline is July 2, but Collins said the preregistration event allows people to take advantage of the free concert, and those who sign up for H.O.G. membership and preregister will receive a $5 gift card from Goobers.
Preregistration assures the H.O.G. member will receive the custom printed T-shirt and Rally Pin when he or she picks up the rally package at the official 2009 NC State H.O.G. Rally Site at the Veterans Memorial Park. Preregistration is $30.
Each national H.O.G. member may preregister one guest who is not a H.O.G. member for an additional registration fee of $30. Guests of H.O.G members will not receive a T-shirt and pin.
When the participants in the NC H.O.G. Rally rode through the area in 2005, Goobers hosted an event, and its manager Amy Billings said it intended to do it again this year with additional events other than the preregistration party.
“We’re one of the many places in town welcoming riders associated and not associated with the H.O.G. Rally,” he said. “It’s also a kick off for our outback pavilion, where we will do different shows.”
