DOBSON — Surry Community College horticulture students planted a tree Wednesday, in honor of Earth Day, to symbolize the college’s commitment to a healthy environment as outlined by President Dr. Deborah Friedman in a recent faculty/staff meeting on April 8.

The tree is part of a new landscape adjacent to the college’s greenhouse, also designed and installed by the horticulture students.

This is one of the ways in which the college is trying to demonstrate its commitment to “earth-friendly practices” In addition, environmental sustainability concepts and practices are being incorporated into academic curricula, and the institution is also taking steps to reduce its own carbon footprint by asking to be more conscious in turning off lights and computers when not in use, and to remember to reuse and recycle items when possible.
