Benefits and Fundraisers
n Third-Annual Crooked Oak Moravian Church “Mayfest,” Saturday at Webb-Southern Carroll Community Center on U.S. 52 in Cana, Va., a day-long event to include breakfast, lunch, dinner and Longaberger basket bingo. Breakfast will be offered from 7:30-10:30 a.m., including eggs, sausage, ham, bacon, gravy and biscuits. Lunch featuring hot dogs is planned from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 4 p.m., including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and nachos. Package sales for bingo begin at 5 p.m. and the games at 6 p.m., with the day’s proceeds to aid a church fellowship hall fund.
n The Cruise-In for Christ program, an ongoing series of events highlighted by classic cars, will hold a cruise-in Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church on N.C. 89-West, three miles from the Virginia line. It will honor the memory of old-time musician Barbara Poole, who lost an 11-year battle with breast cancer last year. Cruise-In for Christ gatherings are aiding a number of children’s and other charities with the help of sponsoring local businesses and include food, 50-50 drawings and door prizes. n A poor man’s supper is offered on the third Thursday of each month at Salem United Methodist Church on Wards Gap Road, from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu consists of pinto beans, cabbage, stewed potatoes, corn bread, a drink and homemade dessert at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children. Drive-in service is available. Proceeds are aiding a church building fund.
Special Services
n Asbury Presbyterian Church, 1084 Flippin Road, will hold “Friends Day” Sunday, to include a worship service at 10 a.m. and special music by The Country Boys, with a covered-dish meal planned afterward. Pastor Terry Collins and the congregation invite everyone to attend.
n Annual “Missionary Day in White” at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, 321 N. South St., Sunday, 4 p.m., sponsored by the church Missionary Society. Evangelist Alberta Carter of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Pinnacle will speak, with those attending encouraged to wear white.
n Blue Hollow Baptist Church on Slate Mountain Road will hold a revival, beginning Sunday and continuing through Thursday, with Brother Fred Hawks — a missionary in Latvia with a prison ministry — as guest speaker. Special singing also is planned for the services, which begin Sunday at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the other four days, featuring Vessels of Clay, Rich in Tradition and the Shiloh Baptist, Fancy Gap Baptist and Westside Baptist church choirs. A covered-dish dinner is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday. Everyone is invited to attend the revival.
n Revival services begin Sunday at Pleasant View Baptist Church at 154 Mount View Drive and will continue through Wednesday, with Sunday’s service slated for 6 p.m. and those on the other three days, 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Tony Holder, pastor of Ladonia Baptist Church.
n Gospel Mission Baptist Church, 1046 Linville Road, will hold revival services from Sunday to next Friday, 7 p.m. each day. Brother Rayton Puckett will be the speaker, with special music planned nightly. Pastor Kenneth Young invites everyone to attend.
n Revival services begin Monday at Paul’s Creek Baptist Church in Cana, Va., and will continue through Thursday, 7 p.m. each day. The Rev. Darrell Tate will be the speaker and special music is planned, including the Westfield Baptist Church choir on Monday, the Lambsburg Baptist choir on Tuesday, the Crooked Oak Moravian choir on Wednesday and the Mount Airy Pentecostal Church Singers on Thursday. Pastor Larry Jones invites everyone to attend.
n True Vine Baptist Church will hold a revival Monday through next Friday, 7:30 p.m. each day, with Dr. Phil Kidd of Mississippi as guest speaker and special singing nightly. From Mount Airy, the church is on the left side of U.S. 52-North, just before the Virginia line. Upcoming Events
n Mother’s Day luncheon, May 2, noon, at Salem United Methodist Church, to include special music and a flower for each lady attending. Advance tickets are available for $10, with proceeds to aid a church building project. Tickets or more information can be obtained from Carol Thomas at 789-1766.
n Bone marrow and blood drive in honor of Ann Honeycutt, May 3, 1-5:30 p.m., at the Pine Hill Friends Meeting fellowship hall in Ararat. The drive is being organized by East Surry High School student Morgan Chilton as a senior project.
n A “Walk for Jesus” parade is planned May 3 at 3 p.m. in downtown Mount Airy, beginning at the BB&T Bank parking lot and ending at the city post office. Those wishing to participate, who are asked to be at the bank at 2 p.m., can contact Elder Carolyn F. George of the sponsoring Faith Tabernacle E.P. Church at 325-8081 for more information.
n Spring revival at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ararat, May 3-5, 7 p.m. each day. The Rev. Kermit Gray and the Piney Grove choir will be featured at the May 3 service, the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt and the Mount Zion choir on May 4 and the Rev. Lee Johnson and the Rock Hill choir on May 5. Everyone is welcome.
n The Community Church at 280 O’Neal Road will hold revival services from May 4-8, 7 p.m. each day. Brother Tommy Vass will be the speaker and special singing is planned nightly, with everyone welcome.
n Jubilee services at Friendly Chapel Church at Pilot Mountain, May 10-13, to be held at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 10 and 7:15 p.m. the other three days (with a prayer room scheduled for 7 p.m. on those days). Brother Don Collins, Friendly Chapel pastor, will speak at the May 10 services, with The Easter Brothers to sing at the evening gathering. The May 11 service will feature Brother Alan Barker, pastor of Northwoods Baptist Church, and its choir; on May 12, Brother Joe Arthur will preach and singing by Greg Cook and the Friendly Chapel choir is planned; and the May 13 service will include Arthur and out-of-town singers. Visitors are welcome.
n Mount Zion Baptist Church at Ararat is seeking craft vendors for its autumn fair scheduled Sept. 12 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interested crafters are asked to call Jean at 374-5804 for further details.
Miscellaneous
n April golf tournament sponsored by Salem United Methodist Church, Saturday, with an 8 a.m. tee time at the Pine Ridge Classic course. The tournament format will include four-man teams at a fee of $50 per person, cash prizes to be awarded to the top three teams ($400 to the winner), a $5,000 hole-in-one contest sponsored by Southern Community Bank and Trust (with the golfer and church splitting the prize), a $100 hole-in-one prize on No. 5 and others for closest to the pin and longest drives on all par-three and par-five holes. n “Operation Inasmuch” will be observed at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Several projects have been planned for the church’s hands-on local missions, with the public invited to participate. Those interested may call the church office at 786-7435 for further details.
n The First Baptist Church Feeding Friends Soup Kitchen provides a free hot meal to families and friends in need every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The church is between Elm and Galloway streets at 714 N. Main St. Parking is available behind First Baptist off Arch Street. The feeding friends dinner is served in the fellowship hall in the building closest to downtown, with signs available to guide visitors.
n A free “soup kitchen” is available on the last Thursday of each month in the Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come as they are with no strings attached. The church is at 278 Piney Grove Road, which can be reached at 356-4196.
n Intercessory prayer sessions are now being held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at Faith Tabernacle E.P. Church, 559 S. Franklin Road. The public is invited, with more information available at 789-1569.
n A free dinner for the needy in the community is offered on the third Sunday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church at Pilot Mountain, off Cook School Road. The food is available on a dine-in basis, or by delivery to residents of the immediate area. Deliveries can be arranged through Doug Brinkley at 351-4912, with more information about the meals available from Frankie Taylor at 351-4422.
n Meetings for those healing from a broken marriage, each Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Genesis Full Gospel Church on Sparger Road. Everyone is invited, with more information available at 351-4718.
n Food assistance for the hungry in the community is provided each Thursday at 8:30 a.m. by Trinity Episcopal Church.
n The Apostolic Ministerial Association is seeking new ministers of the Apostolic faith in order to encourage meetings with others that can help improve individual ministries. Those interested may call 789-1569 or 325-8081.
n Men’s interdenominational Bible study and prayer breakfast, 7 to 8 a.m. each Wednesday at Prime Sirloin Restaurant in Mount Airy. All interested men are invited.
n Soup kitchen, 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at The People’s Church in the Holly Springs area, offering a warm meal and fellowship. From Mount Airy on U.S. 52, the church can be reached by turning right off the Holly Springs Exit, traveling one mile and turning left onto Gospel Time Way; it is right before the Interstate 74 overpass. Participants can dine in or have meals delivered to them free, but due to staff limitations they must be in need and live in the immediate area. Those needing delivery are asked to call 789-1555 or 755-6746 before 3 p.m. on the designated Tuesdays.
n GriefShare, a bi-weekly video seminar featuring experts on grief-recovery topics which is geared toward grieving persons or their supporters in a group-participation environment, is held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6:15 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 314 S.
