The Virginia State Police is intensifying its search for leads in a series of tractor-trailer shootings last week along Interstate 77 south of Fancy Gap near the Surry County line.

Investigators announced the expanded search Monday after releasing new information in the case, indicating that a man with his right arm apparently in a cast was among the occupants of a suspect vehicle from which shots were fired at three rigs.

Despite gunfire being targeted toward the trucks’ cabs, no one was injured in the shootings, in which in the victims apparently were picked at random, Sgt. Mike Conroy of the Galax office of the Virginia State Police has said.

The suspect vehicle, according to an updated description, is an early 1990s-model gold or brown sedan, believed to be a Chrysler or Plymouth Acclaim, containing two or three people.

On Monday, Conroy reported that a surveillance video recovered from a nearby convenience store captured an image of a vehicle fitting that description around the time of the shootings, which occurred about 2 a.m. Thursday. A man, who appeared to have the cast, is shown exiting the car to go inside the convenience store, which was among a number of area businesses checked for possible information on the suspects.

Authorities are hoping the new information might cause someone in Virginia or a neighboring locality to identify the vehicle, the man seen getting out or others who might have been in the car.

Two of the three tractor-trailers — all southbound toward North Carolina at the time — were fired on at Mile Marker 7 on Interstate 77, while the third was hit by bullets at the two-mile marker. This occurred as the suspect car passed at a high rate of speed with its lights off, Conroy has said.

Numerous leads already have been generated during the investigation, which led officials of the Wytheville field office of the Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation to thank the public on Monday.

Any new tips generated as a result of the surveillance video can be directed to the state agency at (276) 223-3131 or, if in Virginia, toll-free at 1-800-542-8716. Information also can be sent by e-mail to bci-wytheville@vsp.virginia.gov.
