On Monday, the Cardinals (13-6) flew from their 1A perch to face 2A North Surry (4-9) and came away with a 7-2 win. While only managing four hits, East Surry took advantage of pitching issues among the Greyhounds’ staff mixed with clutch hits.
The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning, when Walt Tuttle walked with the bases loaded. The next batter, Logan Needham, singled in two more runs before Jason Murphy’s sacrifice fly scored Tuttle for a 4-0 East Surry lead.
In the third, East Surry was the recipient of two more runs via walks with the bases loaded and Needham singled in another run for a 7-0 edge. Needham provided nearly all of the Cardinals’’ offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
“He had a strong game today,” East Surry coach Barry Hall said. “He hit the ball hard each time that he came up.”
The Greyhounds’ first run came in the top of the fifth, when Wes Hunter’s single to right scored Cody Palmer. In the seventh, Ryan Stone scored on a passed ball for North Surry’s final run. Josh Holderfield and Champ Reynolds each doubled in the loss.
