WILKESBORO — A probe into a weekend shooting by a N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission in Wilkes County that left a 76-year-old man dead is still under way.

Officer Mark Minton, a 12-year veteran of the Law Enforcement Division of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, was on patrol on the opening day of the 2009 spring wild turkey season when the incident occurred, according to a statement issued by the commission.

“An armed confrontation with a hunter resulted in Officer Minton firing a shot, apparently in self-defense, which led to the death of the alleged assailant,” the commission said. The shooting took place around 7:30 a.m. in the Cane Creek area of Wilkes County.

Although the commission would not make additional comment, other media outlets have reported that Clyde Coffey was the victim, and was shot while on his own land.

The investigation of the shooting is being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation, in accordance with prescribed procedures. Officer Minton is currently on paid administrative leave.
