The incident, initially reported as an armed robbery, occurred about 11 a.m. Friday at the store on South Key Street.
A spokesman for the Pilot Mountain Police Department said the suspect grabbed the collection container from a checkout counter at the front of the store and fled.
It contained contributions for a charity believed to be Special Olympics, the police spokesman said. The loss involved a small sum of cash, he said, and no injuries resulted.
Store surveillance tapes are expected to be reviewed in an effort to determine the identity of the man, who will face a larceny charge if caught.
A woman who said she was a manager at the store declined to comment on the incident Friday.
