n A Yadkin County man was charged Thursday with felonious possession of cocaine after a traffic stop by Mount Airy Police Department officers.

Rafael Guzman Chavez, 20, of Boonville, was a passenger in a 1987 Nissan pickup that police pulled over in the vicinity of Woltz and Carter streets due to the vehicle’s license plate showing up as lost or stolen. After a brief investigation, officers searched the pickup and Chavez allegedly was found in possession of 2.3 grams of cocaine. He was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on May 20.

n Also Thursday, Alma Goodman Strickland of Cana, Va., reported that flower bouquets valued at $140 had been stolen from two graves at Oakdale Cemetery on North Main Street. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
