Benefits and Fundraisers
- Bake sale sponsored by Wards Gap Church, Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m., at Mayberry Mall beside Kmart. The sale will offer items including cakes, pies, cupcakes, brownies, chess bars, fudge, fried apple pies and more, with proceeds to aid church projects.
- The Cruise-In for Christ program, an ongoing series of events involving classic cars, food and other activities, will hold a cruise-in Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Wyatt’s Trading Post, 705 W. Pine St. (the Subway Plaza). Cruise-In for Christ gatherings are aiding a number of children’s and other charities with the help of sponsoring local businesses. - Pancake breakfast, Sunday, 8 a.m., at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, after a 7:15 a.m. sunrise service, with the menu also to include sausage, coffee and orange juice. Sponsored by the Baptist Men group of the church, the breakfast will be free, with donations to be accepted. Proceeds will aid missions, including a planned trip to Vermont in July. Sunday school and a worship service led by the Rev. Robert McCrary are planned afterward, at 9 and 10 a.m., respectively.
- Mount Airy First Pentecostal Holiness Church will sponsor the “Motorcycle Ride for Missions” on April 18, in which the Wings of Glory Christian Bikers Ministry will host a ride starting from Food Lion in Dobson. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the kick stands to go up at 11 a.m. The $10 cost per rider includes door prizes and a meal to be served afterward at the church at 132 Chadwick Lane, just off U.S. 52-North near the Virginia line. - A poor man’s supper is offered on the third Thursday of each month at Salem United Methodist Church on Wards Gap Road, from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu consists of pinto beans, cabbage, stewed potatoes, corn bread, a drink and homemade dessert at a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children. Drive-in service is available. Proceeds are aiding a church building fund.
Special Services
- Revival services conclude today at 7 p.m. at Shining Light Baptist Church, 1056 Pipers Gap Road, featuring Brother Leon Holyfield, evangelist, as guest speaker and special singing. Pastor Elmo Hiatt invites everyone to attend, with more information available at 786-6057.
- Revival services begin Sunday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Cana, Va., and will continue through Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. each day. The speakers will be the Rev. Louis Martin and the Rev. Isreal Gwyn, Oak Grove’s pastor, with special singing planned each night.
- Pleasant View Baptist Church at 154 Mount View Drive will hold revival services beginning April 26 and continuing through April 29, with the April 26 service slated for 6 p.m. and those on the other three days at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Tony Holder, pastor of Ladonia Baptist Church.

- “Operations Inasmuch” will be observed at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. - A “Walk for Jesus” parade is planned May 3 at 3 p.m. in downtown Mount Airy, beginning at the BB&T Bank parking lot and ending at the city post office. - Social, hosted by Higher Grounds Christian Singles, today, 7 p.m., at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 183 Rock Quarry Road in the Rock Creek community of North Wilkesboro. - The First Baptist Church Feeding Friends Soup Kitchen provides a free hot meal to families and friends in need every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The church is between Elm and Galloway streets at 714 N. Main St. Parking is available behind First Baptist off Arch Street. The feeding friends dinner is served in the fellowship hall in the building closest to downtown, with signs available to guide visitors.
- A free “friendship meal” is being offered on the last Thursday of each month in the Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall. Everyone is welcome to come as they are, with the doors opening at 5:15 and the food served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The church is at 278 Piney Grove Road, which can be reached at 356-4196.
- Intercessory prayer sessions are now being held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at Faith Tabernacle E.P. Church, 559 S. Franklin Road. The public is invited, with more information available at 789-1569.
- A free dinner for the needy in the community is offered on the third Sunday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church at Pilot Mountain, off Cook School Road. The food is available on a dine-in basis, or by delivery to residents of the immediate area. - Meetings for those healing from a broken marriage, each Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Genesis Full Gospel Church on Sparger Road. Everyone is invited, with more information available at 351-4718.
- Food assistance for the hungry in the community is provided each Thursday at 8:30 a.m. by Trinity Episcopal Church.
- The Apostolic Ministerial Association is seeking new ministers of the Apostolic faith in order to encourage meetings with others that can help improve individual ministries. Those interested may call 789-1569 or 325-8081.
- Men’s interdenominational Bible study and prayer breakfast, 7 to 8 a.m. each Wednesday at Prime Sirloin Restaurant in Mount Airy. All interested men are invited.
- Soup kitchen, 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at The People’s Church in the Holly Springs area, offering a warm meal and fellowship. From Mount Airy on U.S. 52, the church can be reached by turning right off the Holly Springs Exit, traveling one mile and turning left onto Gospel Time Way; it is right before the Interstate 74 overpass. Participants can dine in or have meals delivered to them free, but due to staff limitations they must be in need and live in the immediate area. Those needing delivery are asked to call 789-1555 or 755-6746 before 3 p.m. on the designated Tuesdays.
- GriefShare, a bi-weekly video seminar featuring experts on grief-recovery topics which is geared toward grieving persons or their supporters in a group-participation environment, is held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6:15 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 314 S. - Holy Angels Catholic Church weekly Evening Prayer Service, Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 1208 N. Main St., Mount Airy. The service includes giving thanks for the gifts of the day and reflection; Evening Prayer hymns and psalms and Scripture readings; time for silent prayer and meditation; and prayers of intercession for the church, world and all those in need. - Compassion Circle gatherings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at L.H. Jones Resource Center, 215 Jones School Road.
