The meal I am speaking of was served at Elkin High School by students in the Family Career Community Leader of America to county commissioners and honored guests before Monday night’s commissioners’ meeting at the school.
The students were professionally dressed, making sure every detail was attended to. The tables were perfectly set with an arrangement of blue hyacinths adorning each. I still think about how wonderful they smelled. But, that was just part of the experience, the meal was outstanding.
The students had placed a spinach and parmesan salad on the table that was absolute perfection. I find that when I go to a restaurant the salad is always too big. I can’t eat it all and the rest goes to waste. But this salad was small, yet the perfect size.
Next out was a heavenly plate of roast pork tenderloin that was so tender you could cut it with a fork. Normally I’m not a big fan of green beans, but these were the kind like my mom used to make. As a matter of fact, I later learned that one of the students, Emily Pippin, cooked the green beans that her grandmother Glena Gambill had grown. Completing the plate was roasted red potatoes. It was so delicious. I don’t remember anyone leaving anything on their plates.
Next came desert, which the people sitting at my table were waiting on very patiently. It was a blondie caramel delight toped with vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. Again, I’m not normally an ice cream person, but this was great.
Even the timing of the meal was perfect. We got done with dinner in just enough time to get to the meeting. Everyone bragged on how wonderful the meal was.
I know for a fact this was a better meal than I have had in a very long time. I want to thank the students and their advisor, Debbie McCoin, director of child nutrition for the Elkin City School system. These young people will be well equipped to go out into the world and be able to work in the food service or hospitality industry.
Also, the principal of Elkin High School Mark Byrd, Vice Principal David Johnson, Superintendent Randy Bledsoe could not have been more welcoming. The school looks great and clearly the students are getting a quality education because it was announced at the meeting that night that Elkin High School has the highest graduation rate in North Carolina.
So to everyone at Elkin High School, keep up the good work and if you are serving dinner anytime soon, here’s how to reach me:
