PILOT MOUNTAIN — An investigation is under way of a former Surry County School System employee.

According to reports Thursday the employee, a former bus driver and school food services employee, is being investigated for possibly having inappropriate relations with a student.

She was initially employed by the school system in 1999 as a bus driver and a cafeteria worker at East Surry High School, but is no longer working there, according to Fred Johnson, attorney for the school system.

“It is my understanding that the separation of her employment with Surry County Schools occurred March 30, 2009,” said Johnson.

School officials did not offer a comment, stating the issue is a personnel matter.

The investigation was initially headed up by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. However, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson, once his office discovered the case occurred within the Pilot Mountain city limits it was turned over to the Pilot Mountain Police Department.

Chief Darryl Bottoms with the Pilot Mountain Police Department said he did not receive information on the case until late Thursday and felt he was unable to comment on the case not knowing all of the details.

Because no charges have been filed, The Mount Airy News is not publishing the name of the probe’s target. No further information was available at press time.
