STUART, Va. — Two people have been arrested stemming from a recent beating and robbery in Patrick County, including one suspect who was taken into custody in Mount Airy late Wednesday.

The suspects were sought in the wake of an attack last Friday on a Claudville man, who was beaten unconscious and stripped of some of his clothing.

William Wesley Webb, 22, of 416 Pine Ridge Road, Mount Airy, was located on West Pine Street near Beasley Street Wednesday night, with a routine check for outstanding warrants revealing that Webb was wanted in Patrick County for assault and robbery.

Webb was arrested by Mount Airy Police Officers P.E. Ellis and J.M. Inman, charged with being a fugitive from justice and confined in the Surry County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond, pending his extradition to Virginia.

Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said Thursday that the second suspect in the case, Gregory Wayne Davis, 32, also has been located after officers issued a public appeal earlier this week seeking information on Davis’ whereabouts. “Both of them are now in custody,” Smith said. An address for Davis was not available.

Webb and Davis are accused of giving the victim a ride, then beating him after he did not comply with their demand to give them money, based on an investigation by Lt. Katherine Layman of the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, whose name has not been released by authorities, accepted the ride from the two, one of whom he knew. But during the ride, the men stopped their vehicle on the roadside and demanded money. When the passenger told them that he had none, the pair allegedly beat him.

He awoke later on the side of the road, missing some of his clothing, and with severe injuries requiring hospitalization. The Patrick sheriff said Thursday that the victim has since been released from the hospital.

Smith also praised the interstate cooperation with North Carolina law enforcement officers which resulted in Webb’s arrest. “It’s as if the state line doesn’t exist,” the Patrick sheriff said. He added that the Mount Airy Police Department was instrumental in bringing a suspect to justice in the recent beating and robbery, while the Surry County Sheriff’s Office has cooperated with Patrick officials on past cases.

“We really have a good relationship with them,” Smith said.
