The Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the Surry County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a suspicious fire which left a woman displaced after her home was extremely damaged Monday afternoon, fire officials said yesterday.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Lu Ann Burks of 121 W. Crosswinds Court in the Flat Rock community of Mount Airy entered her home and discovered smoke and flames, said Earl Mounce, the assistant Surry County fire marshal.

The fire was called into the Surry County Communication Center through 911 at 5:13 p.m. and the Four way, Franklin and Bannertown volunteer fire departments responded.

Mounce said the home, which is not “totally” damaged, is not livable because of smoke and flame damage and Burks is being assisted by the local American Red Cross.

“The home was extensively damaged, but there were no injuries,” said Bruce Crigger, the chief of the Four Way Volunteer Fire Department, who was on the scene. “No one was at home during the fire.”

Mounce said the fire is being investigated as “suspicious” by the fire marshal’s and sheriff’s offices.

“There will be further investigation,” he said, noting that a cause for the blaze has not been determined.
