PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry scored four runs in the fourth inning to break open a tie game with North Surry.
The Cardinals held off a North rally for an 8-5 win.
The Greyhounds drew first blood as catcher David Shaeffer tripled and scored off a single by Payden Simmons.
The Cards answered in the bottom of the first. Logan Sheets singled, and Jeremy Gilley sacrificed him to second base. Drew Wilson doubled Sheets in.
“Drew has been tearing it up lately,” said Coach Barry Hall.
In the bottom of the second, East took the lead with the help of a couple of miscues.
One man reached on an error, and another was hit by a pitch. When the runners were in scoring position, Sheets singled them both in for a 3-1 lead.
The Hounds would answer in the top of the third.
North got a runner on because of an error, and Simmons tripled home a run. Simmons then scored off a sacrifice fly by Nick Wilson for a 3-3 tie.
In the fourth inning, Seth Brim walked, and Preston Smith came on to run.
Weston Payne dropped a bunt to move Smith to third with one out.
Sheets got another RBI with a sharp single to center.
The ball got past the center fielder, and Sheets hustled all the way to third on the error.
Gilley worked a walk to put runners at the corners.
A curve ball that bounced in front of the plate allowed Gilley to reach second base. Then the Hounds used the open base at first to intentionally walk Drew Wilson.
Shaeffer attempted to pick Wilson off first, but the snap throw was low and got away from the fielder. Sheets scored and Gilley went to third.
Alec Wilson followed with a blast to left.
The fielder tried to make an over-the-shoulder catch near the fence, but the ball came free for a double that let two runs in for a 7-3 lead.
The Hounds had a great chance to tie the game in the sixth.
Dustin Johnson and Tyler Clement walked, and Logan Sawyers doubled to the fence in center to score Johnson and move Clement to third.
Caleb Hobernicht reached on an outfield error that scored Clement and put runners on the corners with none out. That made it 7-5.
Pitcher Scott Meredith then struck out Tanner Hodgin and drew a dribbler back to the mound.
Meredith threw to Drew Wilson for one out, and he relayed the ball home to Madison Chilton who tagged out Sawyers for the third out.
“North Surry has one of the better teams they’ve had in years,” said Coach Hall. “Coach (Travis) Gammons does a great job with them. It’s fun to play them because they play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”
The Cards travel to West Wilkes for a game today, while the Hounds host Surry Central on Tuesday.
