East Surry’s Zach Koons, a football standout, is 3-0 in singles play in his first year on the team. The senior also won his doubles match, contributing to both of the Cards’ team points.
PILOT MOUNTAIN — Surry Central took five of six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 win over East Surry Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles won convincingly at the top two spots, then pulled out some close first sets at the other four positions.
The Eagles won the first sets in all six matches, but East Surry’s Zach Koons came back to win the fourth-seed match.
Trent Day pulled out a close 7-5 set with Koons, but the senior rallied to take the next one 6-0. Then in the tiebreaker, Koons pulled ahead 10-4.
At the third spot, Central’s Zach Wilmoth edged Austin Johnson 6-4 in the first set, then won 6-0 in the second.
At the fifth spot, Central’s Kirk Needham was tied up with Daniel Hancock midway through the first set before winning 6-4, 6-3.
Sixth seed Weston Mosley pulled away from East’s Daniel Moore for a 6-2, 6-0.
“I have been impressed with the whole top six,” said Coach Mark Parsons. “They are showing mental toughness in pulling out these tight sets.”
Top seed Luke Haymore didn’t have any drama as he took care of Tanner Hartley 6-0, 6-0.
Colby Chilton wasn’t far behind as he beat East’s Canaan Johnson 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Haymore and Chilton won 8-3 over Hartley and Austin Johnson.
At the second spot, Wilmoth and Day beat Canaan Johnson and Hancock 8-5.
Koons kept his success going, teaming up with Tyler Pardue to give East an 8-4 win over Needham and Mosley.
The Eagles beat Mount Airy last week and take on Bishop this Thursday. In between those two tough opponents, Parsons was worried about his team being mentally into the match, but they came through fine.
Central is 5-0, 4-0 in the Northwest Conference. The team will have a better feel for their progress after taking on last year’s league champs Thursday.
