Chad Tidd, Mount Airy Chick-fil-A franchise owner, stands with SCC Introduction to Business students who he recently spoke to about the importance of having a vision and implementing that vision.

DOBSON — Students in a Surry Community College Introduction to Business class, taught by Dawn Worley, recently had an opportunity to learn more about franchises.

Chad Tidd, owner and operator of the Chick-fil-A franchise in Mount Airy, spoke to the students about the challenges and rewards of operating a franchise.

Tidd explained that an integral part of being a business owner is one’s willingness to accept personal responsibility. He discussed various types of franchise ownership opportunities including: single unit, multi-unit, master of franchises, and purchase of existing franchises.

He noted that he was especially pleased to have the opportunity to own a Chick-fil-A, since 20,000 candidates applied for a franchise last year. Only 50 applicants were chosen. He indicated that Chick-fil-A is a debt-free organization, which means that all its properties and locations are paid for in advance of opening day. Tidd attributes the success of the Chick-fil-A franchise to a well-written business plan as well as the entrepreneurial spirit of S. Truett Cathy, franchise founder.

Tidd stressed the importance of a manager’s personal vision and the implementation of that vision for any business. He told students they should continually strive to enhance their business skills which will serve them throughout their careers. He noted that his personal vision for the Mount Airy location is to provide a most remarkable dining experience and excellent service to customers.

He said he strives to be an elite employer in Surry and surrounding counties. Tidd noted he looks for employee candidates who are willing to serve with a grateful spirit. In return, he said he offers a fun and engaging environment geared toward developing the whole person.

He concluded his discussion with a presentation of two gifts to students: breakfast coupons and a book written by S. Truett Cathy entitled “Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People.”
