Mount Airy’s soccer streak was snapped at six wins as South Stokes won 9-0 Thursday.
The Lady Sauras are a physical team and controlled the midfield most of the game.
South Stokes looks very good this season, said Coach Will Hurley.
Surry Central’s defense is the best the Sauras will face, but South Stokes could win the conference, he predicted.
The Sauras jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the half.
Co-captain Vanessa Armenta was injured on a sliding tackle, and leading scorer Andi Moore was dealing with a flareup of a sore heel that she first hurt during the basketball season.
Hurley said Grace Halpern was the player of the game.
“I don’t care what the score was, she never stopped,” he said.
With Moore resting, Hurley put Jordan Jackson at striker. The Bears didn’t get many good attacks, but Jackson kept trying.
“Christy Beasley, there aren’t many cheerleaders who will get in there and mix it up like her,” he said of the senior.
The other Beasley also played well, he said, as in Beasley Nester.
Hurley spelled keeper Ailia Halpern and said Maria Rodriguez did a great job in relief. She only gave up two goals in the second half, then the final goal came when the Bears’ defenders accidentally knocked the ball into their own net.
The Bears (6-1) play again today, hosting West Stokes.
