The Mount Airy girls lost to Bishop McGuinness Friday in their first conference match-up of the season at home, 8-0.

The Lady Bears also lost their first game of the year to North Wilkes on Thursday. Though the team is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference Head Coach Jill Brown said “We are a team of young girls that are heading in the right direction.” Both Katie Hicks and Maddison Widener pitched for the Bears Friday and each registered several strike-outs against the Villains.

Pitcher Katie Hicks scored the only run of the night for the Lady Bears.

Bears Athletic Director Donald Price said “This is a young team that is developing but the team will learn to win more as they look for opportunities to improve.”

Brown and Price agreed the depth at pitching was a big plus for the young team.

The next game is scheduled to be Tuesday at 5 pm at North Surry.
