DOBSON — A Virginia man wanted on federal drug charges was being held in the Surry County Jail Wednesday after his arrest by a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper, authorities said.

Barry James Anderson, 41, of Claudville, had been declared a fugitive by the Patrick County, Va., Sheriff’s Office after his recent indictment by a federal grand jury on two counts of distribution of methamphetamine in excess of 50 grams in weight.

Patrick Sheriff Dan Smith said earlier this week that Anderson had been actively evading capture, and issued a public appeal for information regarding his whereabouts.

This culminated Tuesday night when the N.C. Highway Patrol trooper encountered Anderson at an address on Mears Road in Surry County. Sheriff Graham Atkinson said a routine check revealed that Anderson, in addition to the federal drug charges, was wanted on a probation violation stemming from a felonious larceny case.

Anderson subsequently was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $75,000 secured bond and is awaiting extradition to Virginia.

The drug indictments against the Claudville man stemmed from a two-year covert investigation headed by the Patrick Sheriff’s Office which also involved federal authorities and has led to numerous charges against area residents.
