PINEHURST — Tanner Owen, a Bishop McGuinness junior, has won player of the year honors in the 19th-annual Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst.
More than 120 boys and girls took part in the eight-tournament series, all played on the many courses at the Pinehurst Golf Course.
Winternational only counted the four-highest point totals for each individual. Owen won three events and finished second in another, putting him well ahead of the field.
The final event over the weekend was played on Pinehurst Centennial No. 8 course.
Owen shot a 76 on the first day, one shot behind Davis Morrison, Charlotte. The next day, Owen lowered his score to 73, one over par, while Morrison went up to 77, giving Owen a three-stroke lead.
Gregory Mauldin, Archdale, was one shot behind Morrison with scores of 79 and 74.
With North Surry’s two-time 2A state champion, Taylor Coalson, off to UNC-Greensboro, Owen is one of the favorites for Northwest player of the year. Owen already has signed with Wake Forest.
