DOBSON — The Surry Central girls softball team began the season 1-2 but Head Coach Glenn Craddock said he expects things to get better now that several basketball players on the team will get in more practice and every one has settled in.

The Golden Eagles first loss was against West Forsyth, who won 17-2. Then, East Wilkes won 14-5 over the team.

The Golden Eagles pulled out their first win 11-5 against Reagan in a softball game they played on March 3 after being rescheduled.

Craddock said he does not back down from playing a tough schedule and said he thinks it is good for the team to compete against tough teams such as West Forsyth.

“It helps us see what we are made of, and will make us want to do better,” said Craddock.

Craddock said a lot of experience will return to the Lady Golden Eagles and he expects to put it to work and get the team into state competition again this season. The team has made it into the state playoffs five out of the past six years. That is significant because Craddock said the Northwest Conference in softball is “one of the toughest in the state.”

There are six seniors and six juniors on the Eagles team this season. The seniors are Jordan Wood, Meagan Hudson, Brittany Lewis, Joanna Wall, Brittany Meyers, and Elise Austin. The juniors are Cassidy Joyner, Kendra Johnson, Holly Mason, Samantha Cox, Tori Blevins, and Ashely Craddock. The only sophomore on the team is Kristin Key and Kaitlin Anthony is the only freshman.

Craddock said only the catcher and pitcher positions had been determined. Austin, Joyner, and Johnson have been designated pitchers; and Anthony along with Holly Mason are designated as the catchers, he said.

Senior Myers and Elise Austin are both returning All-Conference and All-State players; and Senior Joyner has made All-Conference twice, said Craddock.

The Lady Golden Eagles were scheduled to play South Stokes on Tuesday but due to rain the game has been postponed.

The next game is scheduled on March 12 at home against North Stokes at 4 p.m.
