ELKIN — Mrs. Claudine Poindexter Byrd, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, March 3, 2013, at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. She was born in Surry County on May 30, 1921, to the late Gilmer and Lizzie Wood Poindexter Bray. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was retired from Chatham Manufacturing in Elkin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Byrd; one daughter, Judy Elizabeth Byrd Cockerham Combs; and two brothers, Fred Poindexter and Ray Bray. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Amy Jo and Arnold Gray Childress of Dobson; two grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Katrina Cockerham and Amanda and Jamie Gann; four great-grandchildren, Conner Cockerham, Isabella Cockerham, Eli Cockerham and Elizabeth Gann; sister-in-law, Fern Poindexter of Dobson; a special niece, Freddie Stanley of Dobson; and special friend and caregiver, Arlene Marsh of Dobson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Fairview Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Andy Atkins and Jamie Gann will conduct the services.
