KERNERSVILLE — The Mount Airy Lady Bears ended their postseason play Friday night with a loss to Bishop McGuinness, 56-43.
Coach Howard Mayo said the girls “played very hard and did a lot of good things defensively, but we just struggled, missing open shots and layups.”
The team was 8 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Mount Airy got behind in the first quarter, scoring 9 to Bishop’s 15, and while the Bears outscored the Villains in the second quarter 8-11, it wasn’t enough to take the lead. They went into half-time with Bishop up 23-20.
Then in the third and fourth quarters, the Villains came on strong and outscored the Bears 11-8 and 22-15.
This was the team’s third loss this season to Bishop, who defeated them twice during conference matchups.
For the Lady Bears, the high scorer was Mikayla Sievers with 10, followed by Kathryn Beasley and Symone Simmons, both with eight. Other scorers were Jasmine Varney, six; Alex Atkins, five; Andi Moore, four; and Ayano Shelton, two.
“I can’t say how much I appreciate our seniors — Symone Simmons, Dana Brown, Andi Moore and Jordan Jackson — and what they brought to our program,” Mayo said.
The Lady Bears ended the season with a 17-11 record, the coach said.
