MONROE — The Lady Bears won their second-round playoff game against Monroe High School Wednesday night, 63-56.

Coach Howard Mayo said the Monroe team came out quick and athletic, and they outscored Mount Airy 22-9 in the first quarter.

“Once we figured out we could play with them, we did great,” said Mayo.

In the second and third quarters, the Bears outscored Monroe, 18-4 and 18-12. In the fourth quarter, the teams held even at 18 points each.

Mayo noted Symone Simmons and Davi Barbour had “very good defensive games,” with three steals apiece.

Alex Atkins had the top score for the Lady Bears at 16. Other scorers were Mikayla Sievers with 11; Symone Simmons 10; Jasmine Varney nine; Davi Barbour seven; Kathryn Beasley six; and Andi Moore four.

Mount Airy will face Northwest conference opponent Bishop McGuinness in Kernersville Friday night.

In the two conference season meetings the teams had, Mayo said Bishop won both games, but “we’re going to try to win this week.”
