The Northwest NCHSAA State Wrestling Champion qualifiers from 1A schools North Surry, Surry Central, Forbush, Mount Airy, East Surry and Alleghany stand together after a practice hosted by the Greyhounds and Head Coach Eric Jessup. East Surry’s Timmy Norman sits on top of Cardinal Cody Gaskill’s shoulders among the state-qualifiers. Jessup said at this level of wrestling it comes down to technique and heart. The competition for the 1A schools is scheduled to begin on Friday at 2 p.m. and run through Saturday evening at the Greensboro Coliseum.

On Friday, North Surry hosted Surry Central, Forbush, Mount Airy, East Surry and Alleghany in a state-qualifier’s practice on their home mat. Greyhounds Coach Eric Jessup called the practice a time of comraderie among wrestlers and necessary for wrestlers to meet and work together before the NCHSAA State Wrestling Championships begin for the 1A schools on Friday.
