Mount Airy senior forward Sean Best recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.
Best will begin playing for the BJU Bruins this fall under Head Coach Neil Ring.
Best called the signing an opportunity and said he welcomed it after doing the hard work that his parents had taught him to do. Things such as keeping good grades, being moral and humble, he said.
Best said he was looked at by several colleges and also by the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
He said he choose BJU because “I think they are a role-based family built on God and the church and give you things that not only prepare you in sports, but things like praying together, peer evaluations and counseling with academic advisers.”
Best said, “Things that will help me be a better man and individual.”
He said, “People have given so much to me and I want to give back to them what I have been given.”
“We are excited that he (Best) gets to take this chance to the next level at Bob Jones University,” said Mount Airy basketball coach Levi Goins said. He added that Best is an all-around great kid who has a great work ethic. The coach called him a hard worker both on and off the court and said his best basketball is still ahead of him.
Gloria Best, Sean’s mother, remarked on the irony of her son going from one Bear mascot to another and said the Bruins was a good fit for the family and her son. She called the family “old school.”
“We like what the school offers and the honorable attitude there,” she said.
“Sean has gone through his whole life being honorable and responsible,” said father Brett. “He is an honor student with a Christ-like attitude.”
BJU Sports Information Director Jonny Gamet said assistant coach and recruiter Andrew Wingreen and head coach Neil Ring recruited Best.
“We recognized that Sean was not only a great athlete but a great leader who lives his faith on and off the court,” said Gamet.
He said BJU recruits athletes that fit the school’s philosophy and mindset.
The fact that Best stands 6-foot-8 was another factor that drew the BJU recruiting staff his way. The tallest player currently on the Bruins team is 6-foot-5 inches, said Gamet.
“Best will provide the down in the post, down in the forward and help in the rebounding category that the team is looking for,” said Gamet.
Bob Jones competes in the National Christian College Athletic Association, known as the NCCAA.
