DOBSON — The Lady Eagles’ two seniors combined for 39 points as Surry Central blew out Ashe County 87-53 Monday night.
In the first round of the state 2A playoffs, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and kept a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.
“It was a lot of fun,” described Coach Mandy Holt. “It was good to get that first win in the playoffs.”
Central already celebrated Senior Night this month, but with the Eagles getting a home date, Brittany Lewis and Courtney Hegler got one more chance to play in front of the home crowd.
Lewis made the most of it, sighting in with her midrange jumper on the way to a career-high 18 points. She also made two blocks.
Hegler put up 21 points as well as eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Sarah Bruce matched Hegler with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Cassidy Joyner hit two threes in the first four minutes as Surry Central went up 17-5. After that, the 5-foot-10 junior spent the rest of the night looking for teammates.
Joyner finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists.
“She was seeing the floor well, and she wasn’t forcing the ball,” said Holt. “She had a couple of steals to go with it.”
Marlee Wilmoth had four points, seven boards and four assists.
Tess Dockery hit a three-pointer near the end of the first quarter for a 22-9 lead going into the second quarter. She also had three assists.
The lead reached 15 at 28-13 on a basket by Bruce. That was the margin at the half with Central up 43-28.
The Eagles might have been up more, but they committed several fouls late in the quarter, giving Ashe County nine free throws in the final two minutes.
Dockery and Hegler each picked up their third fouls in the final 1:15.
The Eagles offense just kept rolling in the third, outscoring the Lady Huskies 19-8 for a 26-point lead.
From 67-43, Central went on a 10-2 run for a 77-45 lead.
Holt went to her bench to keep everyone fresh for Wednesday’s second-round game.
Brooke Lewis scored four points, and Kristin Key and Mikayla Cox had two each.
Ashe sophomore Paige Spell came up big for the Huskies. She scored 21 points and carried the team at times.
With the Lady Greyhounds also winning Monday, the Eagles travel to North Surry on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
