Surry Runnin’ Patriots lose in state semis

GREENSBORO — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots lost to the number-one seeded Durham Flight on Friday in the semi-final round of the North Carolina Home Educators State Championship playoffs.

After the 71-47 lose, the Runnin’ Patriots are move to the to the consolation game against North Wake at 2 p.m. today on the Greensboro College Campus.

About the loss, head coach of the Surry Runnin’ Patriots Todd Hill said, “They beat us on the glass, they were stronger than us and won in the rebound battle.”

The game was tight through the first quarter, with the Flight holding a 17-15 lead at the end of the period.

Then the Flight took control of the game, racing to a 37-23 halftime advantage. Durham continued pulling away in the second half, eventually wrapping up the 24-point victory.

“They hit tough shots,” Hill said. He said Durham hit 70 percent from the field in the first half and 50-percent overall for the game.

The high scorer for the Surry Runnin’ Patriots was Jessica Boyd with 15 points. Boyd also had eight rebounds and six steals.

Joye Harrison had 14 points and seven rebounds; Sydney Bedsaul had eight points and five assists; and Kaylee Paris scored six points. Paris also had eight rebounds.

Also for the Pats, Camille Fishel and Ashley Marshall scored two apiece.

Hill said the team’s record is 24-8 this season and will compete in a East Coast Tournament Homeschool Tournament at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., in March.

Surry Runnin’ Patriots’ Joye Harrison and Jessica Boyd were named to the All Conference team, meaning they will can play in the East/West All-Star game in May.
