CARY — Several youth swimmers from the North Piedmont Aquatic Club (PAC) are competing in the Junior Olympics in Cary this weekend.

The Triangle Aquatic Center is hosting the North Carolina 14-and-Under Short Course Age Group Championships (commonly known as the Junior Olympics) today through Sunday.

“We will have several swimmers who will represent PAC,” said Coach Leah Tunstall, who also coaches the East Surry High School team. “We have worked extremely hard to get to this point. It marks months of work and dedication from these young athletes.”

Individual PAC qualifiers include Hadly Tucker, 9, who will compete in the 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard breaststroke. Avery Tucker, 11, will compete in the 50-yard breaststroke, while Sydney Beck, 12, will swim in the 50-yard backstroke and the 100-yard backstroke.

Ashley Hicks, 14, will swim the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and 100-yard backstroke.

Kelsey Tunstall, 14, will compete in the 100 butterfly, 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, and 500-yard freestyle. Kelsey is fresh off two top-10 finishes in the state high school championships last weekend.

The team will take several relay squads to compete as well. In the 11-12-year-old age division, Sydney Beck, Julie Hicks, Mikki Nunn and Avery Tucker will represent PAC in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, and 200-yard medley relay. The 400-yard medley relay team will combine Beck, Hicks, Nunn and fellow teammate Sarah Southard.

In the 10-and-under division, PAC will be represented by Abby Bruce, Carly Bullington, Olivia Marion and Hadly Tucker in the 200-yard medley relay.

“This event is our opportunity to be measured against the best of the best in the entire state of North Carolina,” added Coach Tunstall. “This is a true honor for these young swimmers.”
