Narcotics officers with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a 64-year-old State Road man on charges alleging he has been selling his prescription pain medication, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

Atkinson said the Friday arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation into the sale of prescription drugs in the State Road, Elkin and Mount Park areas of the county.

The investigation resulted in the Friday arrest of George Edward Ashley, of 1737 Old Highway 21.

“He is charged with four counts of trafficking opioids, which is the term for a class of synthetic narcotics,” Atkinson said. “It was a schedule II substance, Roxicodone, which was his own prescription.”

Ashley has also been charged with maintaining a drug vehicle.

Atkinson said Ashley was believed to be obtaining his medication from a VA hospital.

He was discovered to have a handgun in his vehicle at the time of his arrest.

Ashley has been booked into the Surry County Jail under a $5,000 bond.
