KERNERSVILLE — Surry Central beat Bishop McGuinness 38-35 in the last wrestling match of the evening.

The Golden Eagles trailed by three points going into the final weight class when freshman Garrett Johnson became the hero of the night with a pin of Jesse Russell at 113 pounds

Bishop has four strong wrestlers, including returning state champion Alexander Preudhomme at 126 pounds. With the Eagles giving up a another weight to forfeit, that could have given Bishop too sizable a lead for the Eagles to win.

However, the Eagles kept battling and stayed close enough to give Johnson a chance for the team win.

The night started at 120 with Central’s Kevin Pack holding Michael Tanahey (20-13) to a 5-3 decision win.

With Mason Snow out with a foot injury, the Eagles gave up one forfeit to Preudhomme at 126. They also gave up a forfeit at 132 where Uriel Secundino was out with a family issue.

At 138, Raymond Dance was behind just 7-6 in the closing minute with Nicholas Trego (23-9). Dance tried to get a two-point takedown, but was taken down himself for a 9-6 decision loss.

That put Bishop up 18-0. Still, Coach Stephen Priddy was proud of the way Pack and Dance battled for all three periods. Two minor decisions saved the Eagles six points over getting pinned, he noted.

Tyler White got the Eagles on the board with a second-period pin of Connor Cossio at 145.

Dallas Snow lost in the first period to Daniel Hutchens at 152.

Zack Martin earned an 8-4 decision over Riley Simson at 160.

Calvin Inman lost to Frank LaDew in a technical fall 15-0, but kept battling off his back and didn’t give up a pin, Priddy said.

At 182, Bishop’s Nicholas Castellano (20-6) pinned Alex Hernandez.

The Villains don’t have anyone at the upper weights and gave up forfeits to Hunter White, Bryant White and Wes Brown.

At 106, Nathon Bautista did every but pin his man in a 17-1 technical fall. That set up Johnson for the last match.

Garrett’s win was huge, but Tyler White and Zack Martin also impressed, Priddy said.

The win improves Surry Central to 26-10, 4-3 in the Northwest Conference. The conference tournament is this Saturday at North Surry.
