Surry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves congratulates Rebecca Bowes for winning the Third Annual Superintendent’s Veteran’s Day Essay Contest. Bowes wrote that the holiday was all about spending time with veterans and letting them know what they have done is appreciated.

The Surry County Board of Education opened its regular meeting Monday at Franklin Elementary School with the Franklin Elementary Chorus performing music from the Dr. Seuss inspired play, “Seussical.”
The sentiment of “Oh the Thinks You Will Think” set the tone of a meeting dominated by recognitions of academic and athletic accomplishments.
“The month of January has been great for me to get out into the schools,” said new School Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves. “They have just opened up their arms and welcomed me.” Reeves said he has finished the initial visits to all but two campuses in addition to other meetings with staff and principals.
North Surry building technology students’ presentations to students from other county class rooms was complemented by the board and Reeves. These presentations featured students building a modular home to benefit a local family through the Habitat for Humanity program.
“North Surry’s construction classes presentations were not only meaningful but they were done in an excellent way,” said Board Vice Chairman Brian Gates. “They were polished, practiced and professional. Hats off to those young men.” The house is being built on school property and will be transported to the new site once it is chosen. The cooperative effort is a pilot project for the type of partnerships the system hopes to attract for its students’ benefit.
Gentry Middle School student Rebecca Bowes was recognized as the winner of the third annual Superintendent’s Veteran’s Day Essay Contest. Bowes was invited to read her essay at the Nov. 11 Veteran’s Day Celebration in Mount Airy at the War Memorial.
“Rebecca wrote that Veteran’s Day is a day when we should take the time to thank and honor brave veterans. I have many veterans in my family and I appreciate the sacrifices that they have made for our country,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Charles Graham. He also told the group Bowes wrote that the holiday is about spending time with veterans and letting them know what they have done is greatly appreciated.
The Gentry Middle School girls basketball team was congratulated by the board for capturing the Foothills Middle School Athletic Conference championship. The boys basketball team was also recognized for winning the conference championship.
Board members Sue Stone, Clark Goings and Chairman Earlie Coe were recognized for completing various levels of training in the North Carolina School Board Association Academy of School Boardmanship. Stone was congratulated for completing more than 901 hours of training for a Scholar’s Circle honor. Coe earned the Award of Excellence for more than 301 hours of training and Goings earned a Certificate of Merit for more that 31 hours of training.
The entire board received a special achievement award for meeting annual training requirements. Previously, Goings accepted the award on behalf of the board at a special ceremony in Greensboro.
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Terri Mosley reported to the school five elementary schools will have graduation ceremonies at the end of their Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) programs. The proposed dates are April 17 for Dobson Elementary at 9 a.m. and also for Rockford Elementary at 1:30 p.m. Dare graduation will be held at Pilot Elementary on April 18 at 1:30 p.m. and on April 29 at Westfield and Shoals. Westfield’s ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. and Shoals is set for 1:30 p.m.
Graham reported Surry County Schools had successfully met all statutory compliance requirements for the North Carolina Department of Instructional Monitoring Visit. Compliance with these regulations ensures the continuation of a variety of federal programs in county schools including Title I and Migrant and Rural Low Income Schools programs.
He said all 41 indicators were met in the visit. Two schools interviewed during the process were Copeland and White Plains Elementary. He added that county schools met all indicators and the consultants asked the system to make a presentation at the state Title I conference this Fall.
