n The Mount Airy Police Department is investigating a case in which someone tried to steal cigarettes from a local convenience store before fleeing.

The incident was reported Tuesday night at Four Brothers on Holly Springs Road, where a white male concealed Cheyenne cigarettes, a flashlight key chain and a cell phone case in his clothing and attempted to leave without paying. A store employee was able to catch the suspect and recover the items before he left the property in a 1999 blue Honda Civic. The license number of the vehicle was obtained, but an arrest had not been made at last report.

n Sherry Norman Wiles, 39, of 1144 Pipers Gap Road, was cited for larceny Tuesday afternoon at Wal-Mart, where a store employee allegedly observed her steal three pairs of blue jeans. Wiles is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on May 26.

n Also Tuesday, Rebecca Kelli Lovette of Jefferies Street reported the theft of a grill cover from her residence.
