South Stokes edged North Surry 49-46 Tuesday night.

In a nip-and-tuck battle throughout, neither team led by more than five or six points, noted Coach Travis Gammons.

“At the end, we had a shot to send it to overtime and missed it,” he said.

Still, the coach said, “I was pretty pleased. Our effort was good. A shot or two here or there, and it’s a different ball game.”

As for the defense, he said, “We guarded about as good as we have all year.”

The Sauras have some athletic wing players, including football star Jacquan Martin, but it was center Brandon Smith who posted all of the team’s points in the first quarter. The senior hit a shot at the first-quarter buzzer to cut the Hounds’ lead to 11-10.

The Sauras got a little momentum and went up 20-17 at the half. However, the home team came right back and outscored South Stokes 18-12 in the third to take a 35-32 lead into the final quarter.

Gammons said he told the team before the game, “Just concentrate on the process. … Let the scoring take care of itself.”

In a game this close, where every possession is so hard-fought, Gammons said he had his mind on the floor instead of peeking at the scoreboard to see which team was ahead.

North Surry falls to 2-9 in the Northwest Conference, 4-4 outside the league. The Hounds travel Friday to North Stokes, which has yet to win a conference game.
