Mount Airy police are trying to enlist the public’s help regarding a rash of break-ins in the southern section of the city.

“We’ve had a bunch of break-ins in that area,” Capt. Alan Freeman said Thursday afternoon.

The crimes have centered on residential streets in the vicinity of Northern Hospital of Surry County, Freeman said. About 13 break-ins have been reported in that area in recent weeks.

Police are working to solve those which have occurred as well as inform other citizens about the incidents so they might take extra precautions to avoid being victimized.

Freeman suggested that residents become “more vigilant” and attentive, including being on the lookout for any suspicious activity, people or vehicles in neighborhoods. This not only could prevent further break-ins but provide leads on those that have been committed if the same perpetrators are involved.

Anyone witnessing a breaking and entering in progress should call 911, Freeman said.

Citizens who might have tips on the recent criminal activity can notify the administrative office of the Mount Airy Police Department at 786-3535.
