WALNUT COVE — The Lady Eagles nearly doubled up the Lady Sauras for a 64-33 conference win.

Surry Central outscored South Stokes 22-11 in the first quarter and 22-4 in third quarter, while keeping things close in the second and fourth quarters.

Coach Mandy Holt said a focal point of the defense was to slow down point guard Kelli Mounce. Tess Dockery took the assignment at the start, with Marlee Wilmoth providing help.

“Marlee really stepped up,” said Holt. She made four steals on defense, while scoring 12 points and handing out three assists.

Mounce still got loose a few times and finished with 16 points, but the rest of the team didn’t hurt the Eagles, the coach said.

The Eagles were up 11 after the first quarter and then tried to slow the pace down on offense and be more patient, she said. The Sauras made a run, but the Eagles still led by 12 at the break.

After being patient, Holt said she told the girls at halftime to come back out with the same intensity they showed in the first quarter. That resulted in the one-sided run that put the game away 57-27 going into the fourth quarter.

Tess had one heck of a good defensive game, Holt said of her point guard. She didn’t score, but had four assists and a steal.

Cassidy Joyner had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. Brittany Lewis also had 12 points with four boards.

Courtney Hegler had 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Sarah Bruce gave the team four players in double figures with her 10 points. Brooke Lewis added four and Kendra Johnson three.

The Eagles played a very unselfish game, the coach said, adding that she had to tell two players to shoot when they are open because they were actually overpassing.

Surry Central is off on Tuesday and then hosts Bishop McGuinness next Friday.
