A pedestrian was killed in a single-vehicle accident at 840 W. Pine St. in Mount Airy Tuesday night. Identities of the driver of a Plymouth mini-van and the victim have not been released pending notification of family and an investigation by Mount Airy Police Officer Ryan Bennett.

According to Lt. Barry Vanhoy, the call involving a possible pedestrian struck in the roadway was received at about 6:15 p.m. He said when officers arrived they found a white male in the roadway who had apparently suffered multiple wounds. Vanhoy said the victim appeared to have been struck by a single vehicle while crossing the road.

Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said the victim was 47 years old and was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple system trauma. At press time, officials were trying to confirm that the victim was a resident of the Franklin community.

Units from the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Surry County Emergency Medical Services and the Mount Airy Fire Department responded to the call as well as the Mount Airy Police Department.

I hate to hear about this tragedy. I saw all the emergency vehicles on the scene. Praying it wasn't a friend of our James. A.K.A Ted.
